March 2022 - Drum Design + Sub Design

In this bundle I once again looking at sub bass but this time focussing it all about movement, how to give your basslines groove, funk and swing for those head bouncing tracks. 

For the second tutorial we're going to get very experimental. I show off some techniques that can really transform a sound from it origin to a whole other level. This is one of my favourite topics as it can be so free with no rules and is always a lot of fun.

As well as that, I demonstrate how i create my snares using samples utilising layering, eq and more to process tight and snappy hits.

The first tutorial in this bundle is about making music from noise, learn to craft atmospheric noise and then tune it to become a unique playable instrument.

The second focusses on making a simple mid bass patch inside of Serum that has plenty of control through macros and LFO's and post processing to completely change the sound for those mid bass progressions

Kicking this bundles tutorials off focussing on mid / side processing, this has been requested a lot so i've put this together explaining what mid/side means, how to listen out for it, how to analyse it and how to correct it for a more balanced mix.

The second tutorial looks at my Ableton template project and how i start writing music. This has been a game changer for me as a lot of my mix issues started from day 1. I talk about mixdown sidechaining, gain staging and the theory behind this setup.

The first of this bundle's tutorials I show you guys whats on my fx send busses and how i like to use them, not only are they perfect workflow tools but also a way to quickly colour, distort and enhance your tracks. 

For the second tutorial, i wanted to get more creative behind how to make fxs, more specifically uplifters and downshifters. For years i just searched riser in my sample library and ended up with the same bland and overused sample. I teach you the fundamentals of synthesising your own samples that goes way beyond just pitching up and down.

This month i show you techniques for processing mid bass, i start with a basic sound transforming it into something truly evil. This technique can be used over and over again with samples and synths for complex modulations.

For the second tutorial I give you and overview of my latest remix for Ekou Recordings talking about what i look for and how i approach remix stems then into a full view into how i made the track

For this bundles tutorials I take a look back over my track 'Front Left' showing you a breakdown of the sub and mid bass focussing on the progression, creation and arrangement.

The second tutorial is about chopping and processing classic breaks for that old school rhythm and style. 

For the first tutorial, I dive even further into my processes for being randomly creative to develop new and interesting mid bass ideas. 

The second tutorial is about creative sampling and how I use inspiration from the music around me and take it to another level way beyond its origins.

I wanted to focus on drums this month specifically with a loose and funky groove tutorial using sample placement and synthesising hi hats and shuffles.

The second tutorial shows how to tighten, transform and tame your kick drums using samples.

Inside this bundle are two special tutorials, the first is how to process and resample terrible unwanted vocal samples into something completely unique and way more exciting for your track.

The second is about mixdowns, I load up a dubstep track and guide you step by step on how i approach cleaning, sharpening and boosting this track to play out in the clubs

This month we're diving into atmospherics. I'll cover everything from building drones from scratch using synthesis, transforming everyday samples into evolving soundscapes, capturing and reshaping moments with freezing techniques, and using resonance to create rich, tonal textures that sit deep within a mix.

We'll explore synthesis, sampling, freezing, feedback, and resonance, along with practical techniques for creating evolving atmospherics, layered ambience, noise textures, immersive backgrounds and movement to bring more depth into your productions.

In this months session, I’ll cover everything from simple to advanced transitions, dub FXs, a rebuild of one of my favourite hardware synths in Serum, and some final creative experimentation using some unusual stock FX.

We’ll go through risers, pitch drops, tremolo movement, sirens, dub delays Lyra-8 inspired textures, plus deep sound design using grain delay, spectral, and modulated processing.

Following on from last months Pad tutorial, we focus our attention to Leads.

I guide you on how to build powerful, distinctive leads from the ground up using Serum, covering everything from tight plucks to classic rave tones.

Discover how to add tension, layer bass and vocals, and resample creatively using granular synthesis. Rounded off with lush vocoder effects, this gives you everything you need to create unique  and exciting leads

This packs tutorial focuses on creating simple but effective pads that add depth, space, and emotion to your tracks, and it marks the start of Season 3.

We begin with the fundamentals of pad creation and chord writing, showing you how to build solid harmonic foundations that feel full and musical. From there, we explore creative sampling techniques to add texture and character, helping your pads stand out while still sitting naturally in the mix.

Finally, we shape everything with effects and dive into more experimental approaches, giving you tools to push beyond the basics and develop your own sound. A practical, start-to-finish guide to making pads.

In part two of the drum series, we go even deeper into building professional, groove-driven drums from the ground up, picking up right where we left off with last months kick and snare design.

In this session, I’ll guide you through the full process of creating a complete drum loop, covering a range of shuffle grooves, hi-hat patterns, and drum break variations to help your drums feel more dynamic and alive.

We’ll also focus on the finer details, dialling in timing and swing to get that natural groove before bringing everything together, gluing the drums and enhancing the final result with a polished drum buss.
